Abstract

The researcher analyzed the talk and memos from nine sessions of Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy with an unmarried woman. The therapist took a client-centered approach, intervened by reframing, and used Satir¡¯s iceberg metaphor to explore elements of the client¡¯s symptoms, the factors influencing them, and the possibilities for resolving them, including strengthening the client¡¯s insight and exploring past successes. Elements of the symptoms included a dysfunctional family of origin and the client¡¯s negative feeling toward her mother. The symptoms were exacerbated by the client¡¯s unresolved emotion with her mother and her unsuccessful solution attempts. As a result of the therapy, the client¡¯s symptoms decreased and there was a change in her individual, family, and interpersonal relationships. She moved from a past-oriented viewpoint to one focused on the present and future, and she became more responsible and congruent, making better choices and enjoying an increase to her self esteem.
